このたび、生活デザイン学科の佐々木一泰講師がオランダで制作した家具が、JID（日本インテリアデザイナー協会）AWARD 2019において NEXTAGE部門 部門賞を受賞しました。

JID（日本インテリアデザイナー協会）は、1958年に剣持勇氏他47名の先達の方々により活動を開始し、日本のインテリアデザインに関わる人々の全国組織です。またインテリア建築家／デザイナーの国際連盟IFIに加盟する日本で唯一のインテリアデザイナー団体です。

受賞作品は日本の木材とオランダの材料を組み合わせた家具であり、佐々木講師が学生と行う地域活動である木匠塾に関係する奈良県川上村産の吉野杉が使用されています。一部継手加工には工学部実習工場の技術が用いられました。日本から受託荷物で持ち込まれた材料は、オランダで現地アーティストと共に組み立てと加工が行われ、現在オランダ・デン・ハーグ市にあるギャラリーBillytownのブックショップで本棚として使用されています。現地の運搬車で運べるサイズにて設計されており、ヨーロッパ各地で使用され発信されることが期待されます。

Cedar (sugi), one of the best known types of Japanese timber, is raised in artificial forests. “Yoshino cedar (Yoshino Sugi)” is thought to be one of the oldest types. The records show that the history of cedar plantation in the Yoshino goes back 500 years. The cedar trees were planted by hand back then, extremely densely on steep slopes in the Yoshino river basin. The dense planting delays the growth of the trees, which creates lightweight, fine-grained, robust wood after 50-100 years. Thinning takes place periodically. The logged trees used to be transported on the Yoshino River.    

Japanese oceans are known as rich fishing grounds. The richness actually comes from the mountains nearby. Trees, fallen leaves and minerals are carried to the sea by rivers and nourish phytoplankton. Creatures such as shellfish and zooplankton feed on the phytoplankton, and the fish in turn feed on them. In order to catch high quality fish, fishermen have been carrying out tree planting in recent years.       

The mobile bookshelf of the Bookshop of the artist-run space Billytown (The Hague) is designed to bring the shop outside, so as to present the books in various places such as book fairs. Coincidentally the size and weight of the framework of the bookshelf, made of Yoshino cedar, just fitted within the dimensions of the check-in baggage of the airplane, which Kunihiro Sasaki took to travel from Japan to the Netherlands. Sasaki processed the beams prior to his travel so as to meet the regulations of the check-in baggage. Rietveld's Cartesian joint is combined with a Japanese wood joint, then reinforced with bolts. The bookshelves inside the frames have been made with Dutch materials in the Netherlands. The mobile bookshelf unites the construction culture of Japan, which uses wooden columns for support, with that of the Netherlands, which is characterized by brick walls.    

This project has been realized through connecting materials, nature and people. We hope that this connection will continue to grow.

その後、受賞作品展を東京、名古屋、大阪、福岡等で開催。受賞作品に関わる見学会やフォーラムの開催等も予定されています。
